Wine and Wineries

"Wine Country Kansas" is centered in and around Wamego. Home to the Oz Winery, located in Wamego’s well-cared for 1890's downtown district, and three more wineries can be found within15 miles of Wamego. The Wamego area toasts more wineries than anywhere else in Kansas. Visitors can park downtown and enjoy free wine samples at the Oz Winery on the 400 block of Lincoln Avenue.

Wineries and grape growing have a long history in Wamego. The first winery in Kansas was founded just west of Wamego and the oldest commercial vineyard in Kansas continues there. The local branch of Highland Community College boasts its own teaching and research vineyard and is developing a teachng winery. And there are several other small vineyards tucked away like a hidden oasis in the wide and rich Kaw River Valley, which starts at Junction City and runs through Fort Riley to Wamego.
