Wamego’s 12-acre City Park features the state’s only operating stone windmill, circa 1879. And since the park is often listed among the best picnic spots in the state you may want to pack a picnic basket, or grab some take out from one of several restaurants in town and relax on one of the many tree-shaded picnic tables.
An open-air pavilion and restrooms are also available. Enjoy the playground equipment, tennis courts, horseshoe pits, drop line in the two-acre fishing pond*, or take a dip in the Olympic-size swimming pool, which has a diving pool, two kiddie pools and changing rooms.
Or you can stroll back in history as you walk through the Historic Village, a collection of authentic buildings from the 1800’s. In late 2009, the park will also have a new, ADA accessible train for children to hop aboard for a tour of City Park.
Directions
1.5 blocks east of downtown on 4th Street: Turn east on 4th Street off of Lincoln Avenue and go 2 blocks. Turn left at Old Dutch Mill to enter the park.
